MESA, AZ – Chris James, President and CEO of the National Center for American Indian Enterprise Development, issued the following statement highlighting the impact on Indian Country in the bipartisan deal to fund the federal government through September 30th. The Senate passed the legislation today by a bipartisan 79-18 vote, which will avoid a government shutdown through the rest of the fiscal year. The President is expected to sign H.R. 244, or the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2017, before the current continuing resolution expires Friday night.

“The National Center commends Members of Congress from both parties for recognizing that a government shutdown is unnecessary and wasteful, and working together to reach and passing a deal to fund the government through September 30th. For Indian Country, the budget deal means the Indian Loan Guarantee program will receive a small but important increase, Indian Energy Programs will be fully funded, and both entrepreneurial development programs and the Community Development Financial Institutions fund will continue to provide important support to American Indian and Alaska Native entrepreneurs.

“We look forward to  working with Congress over the coming months to ensure the funding needs and priorities of Indian Country are fully met in the fiscal year 2018 Appropriations process.”
