Over the weekend of July 7th, the National Center presented its most recent Youth Entrepreneurship Summit (YES!) at the National United Nations Tribal Youth (UNITY) Conference in San Diego, CA. The National UNITY Conference had 2,400 attendees from over 120 different tribes and nations. YES! occurred during the Friday general session, and featured a short welcome from the National Center’s President and CEO Chris James, as well as a keynote from Nike N7’s Program General Manager and tribal visionary Sam McCracken.
During his keynote address, Sam McCracken brought a former N7 intern Tracie Jackson, now a N7 employee, to the stage to tell her story of how she made her dream of working with the Nike N7 program come true. It was an inspiring story of our hard work and perseverance can pay off.
On Sunday, YES! had two breakout sessions, during which REAL Entrepreneurship and facilitators Russ Seagle, Yona Wade, and Sabrina Arch conducted interactive activities on how to start a business. One of the activities had youth come up with a business that would benefit their tribe and would only need minimal startup capital. Some of the businesses the youth developed were landscaping and jewelry repair shop.
YES! was a tremendously successful event, and we hope to continue it in the future.
