Darrell is of Lakota and Hidatsa descent and is a top celebrity hair stylist, makeup artist, photographer, product developer, pitchman, commentator, and beauty guru with 40 years of experience in the industry. He has worked with celebrities such as Ellen Degeneres, Scarlett Johansen, Selena Gomez, and Cameron Diaz. His work with actress Helen Hunt spanned much of her career, including Mad About You, Twister, As Good as It Gets, Castaway, and Pay It Forward. Learn a bit more about Darrell and his business acumen, which includes founding personal care brand Redleaf America. And make sure to see him “in front of the camera” at RES 2019!

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself and your business.

I am a hairstylist, makeup artist, and a beauty expert with a career that has spanned four decades. Seven years ago, I created a personal care brand called Redleaf America – a three-part, head-to-toe, cleansing, conditioning, and protection line that has three components. All three products do three things. The cleanser is for your hair, face and body; the conditioner is for hair, face, and body, and men and women can shave with it in the shower. Part three is a serum that can be used directly on your face for hydration your body and can be used as a blow-out serum. It is a light oil that dissipates and leaves a luxurious hydrating protecting barrier for hair, face, and body. All formulas are botanically based, eco-friendly and tear-free (great for babies and young children).

2. What did you do before starting your business?

I have been in the beauty business for 40 years – I began my career as a hairstylist in 1979 at the age of 20. I followed my mother and sister into the cosmetology world and have been immersed with it ever since.

3. What aspect of your business gives you the most pride?

I am particularly proud of the fact that Redleaf America is a native-owned, botanical-based, and indigenous line made in the Americas using Amazonian plants and nuts for hydration and protection.

4. Do you have advice for aspiring entrepreneurs?

It is very important to perform “due diligence” before you embark on any business. You should start with a business plan. It is an essential part of any business because it’s the only way you know exactly how much funding you need to get off the ground and ultimately be successful.

Also, do NOT give up. Starting a business is a daunting task and at times an overwhelming experience, but there will be a light at the end of the tunnel. It is rewarding – and worth it – once you reach your goals.

5. Tell us why you’re excited about attending RES this year?

I am excited to host the 2019 RES TV Show and look forward to being on the other side of the camera – and seeing many of you in the audience! I’m also excited to be around so many other Native business owners. I know the energy will be through the roof!

6. Anything else you want to add or share?

If any native person wishes to go into business for themselves, be prepared and know that it will take time and effort. But you have to commit your all and go for it. It may take longer than anticipated, but do not give up. We come from a very resilient background; against all odds we are still here and will continue to be here. It’s our time, let us take the leap with confidence, perseverance, and tenacity. DO NOT FEAR!
