When Navajo-owned small business Northern Arizona Physical Therapy Inc (NAPT) faced the unexpected loss of two remaining option years on a Bureau of Indian Education (BIE)-related contract, the National Center APEX Accelerator provided timely guidance that helped the company take the right next steps to protect its opportunity.
NAPT provides school-based physical therapy services to students served by BIE and tribally funded schools on the Navajo Nation. These services are essential for students who are entitled to receive support under federal law, making contract continuity especially important for both the company and the communities it serves.
The issue began when NAPT was asked to de-obligate a purchase order even though several weeks remained in the period of performance. Since students still needed services, NAPT declined the request. Soon after, the school canceled the company’s two remaining option years and posted the requirement on SAM.gov without prior notice.
Facing a serious contracting challenge, NAPT contacted Mabel Tsosie of the National Center APEX Accelerator, who helped NAPT review the scope of work awarded with the contract, advised how crucial it is to communicate directly with the BIE Contracting Officer, giving the client a clear and appropriate path forward during a time-sensitive situation.
After NAPT contacted the Contracting Officer, the SAM.gov posting was canceled and the company’s two remaining option years were reinstated. As a result, the business retained two years of contract work and could continue providing needed services to students on the Navajo Nation.
